Gothic style gained root in France around 1140. It gradually found its way to Germany, where the Romanesque style was common. When the Gothic architectural style was introduced, it filtered first into places like Trier and Heidelberg that were closer to France.
The first major German gothic work was Strasbourg Cathedral. It was built in the second half of the 13th century. The cathedral sits in the city of Strasbourg in Alsace, a region that’s now part of France but was once part of Germany. This cathedral began in the Romanesque style, but later incorporated Gothic elements. Here are the 10 Best Examples of German Gothic Architecture.

The cathedral is likewise the landmark of Magdeburg. It is also the home to the grave of Emperor Otto I the Great and his first wife Edith. The current cathedral was constructed over the period of 300 years starting from 1209. Despite being repeatedly looted, Magdeburg Cathedral is rich in art ranging from antiques to modern art.

Ulm Minster was begun in the Gothic architecture of the Late Middle Ages but the building was not completed until the late 19th century. When work ceased in the 16th century all of the church except the towers and some outer decorations were complete.
Visitors can climb the 768 steps that lead to the top of the minster’s spire. At 143 m (469 ft), the church gives a panoramic view of Ulm in Baden-Württemberg and Neu-Ulm in Bavaria. In clear weather, a vista of the Alps from Säntis to the Zugspitze can be seen. The final stairwell to the top is a tall spiraling staircase that barely has enough room for one person.
4. Regensburg Cathedral
Regensburg Cathedral also known as St. Peter’s Cathedral, is an example of important Gothic architecture within the German state of Bavaria. It is a landmark for the city of Regensburg. It is also the seat of the Catholic Diocese of Regensburg.

An average of 20,000 people visit the cathedral on a daily. At 157 m (515 ft), the cathedral is the tallest twin-spired church in the world. It is the second tallest church in Europe after Ulm Minster, and the third tallest church of any kind in the world. 6. Frankfurt Cathedral
Frankfurt Cathedral is a Roman Catholic Gothic church. It is located in the heart of Frankfurt am Main, Germany. This cathedral is dedicated to Saint Bartholomew. After it’s construction, the church was seen as a symbol of national unity most especially in the 19th century.

It is the only Gothic church tower in Germany that was completed in the Middle Ages (1330), and has lasted until the present.
