Crockpot Whole Chicken Ingredients:
- Whole Chicken
- Onions
- Olive Oil
- Paprika
- Italian Seasoning
- garlic powder
- salt and pepper
Equipment you need:
- a good crockpot – you will want a 6 qt one. This is the one we used.
How to cook a Whole Chicken in a Crockpot:
- Cut the onions into large slices and place the sliced onions at the bottom of the crockpot. This keeps your chicken above the juices and gives you that rotisserie flavor.
- Place the chicken breast side up,on top of the onions inside the crockpot.
- Use a basting brush to rub the olive oil all over the skin of the chicken.
- Stir together all the seasonings. Sprinkle this mixture onto the chicken and use the basting brush to evenly spread the seasoning mixture onto the chicken.
- Cover and cook on low 4-6 hours, or cook on high for 2-3 hours.
- Make sure chicken has reached an internal temperature of 165 degrees F. Remove chicken from crockpot and serve!
- If you want to have crispy skin like you get with roasted chicken, place the chicken in a baking dish or cookie sheet and broil for 4-5 minutes. Just keep an eye on it so it doesn’t burn!
Slow cooker whole chicken variation ideas:
There are so many different ways to serve up this crockpot whole chicken. Sometimes I will put the chicken on top of potatoes, instead of the foil balls, that way the potatoes cook at the same time.
The juices from the chicken make them extra delicious, too! If you don’t want potatoes, carrots are another great option.
I also like to change up my seasoning from time to time. If you like garlic, you can make a 40 clove garlic chicken in your crockpot!
Simply stuff your chicken with 3 heads, or approximately 40 cloves of garlic, smear the skin with butter and salt and pepper and cook as directed below.
