Truffle Butter Recipe

Once you slather truffle butter over your favorite main course, you are going to understand why this is the perfect savory butter sauce! I like to call my truffle butter a 2-for-2 recipe because it uses 2 ingredients and only takes 2 minutes to make!

I think most of us are aware of the 4 main flavor profiles: sweet, savory, sour, and bitter. There is, however, a 5th flavor profile referred to as “umami.” Umami flavors are considered earthy, savory, and pungent, and are often so unique they stand out on their own. This includes foods like soy, kimchi, green tea, and, of course, truffles!

Decadently rich and slightly garlicky, you are going to love the combination of creamy butter and savory black truffles. My family and I love how this butter recipe tastes with beef. Try using this truffle butter sauce for filet mignon, prime rib, burgers, or roast beef!

  1. Cut softened butter into large chunks and add it to a medium mixing bowl.
  2. Add truffle pate to the bowl with the softened butter.
  3. Mix until fully combined and creamy. For best results, let it rest for 1 day in the refrigerator, or enjoy it immediately.

What is Truffle Butter?

Truffles are a type of mushroom grown deep underground. They are sometimes so difficult to find, specially trained dogs or even pigs are used to finding them (talk about a great sense of smell!).

Truffles come in many varieties, including white, winter, summer, Burgundy, and the most widely recognized: black truffles. Truffles can be purchased whole or dehydrated and are used to infuse salts, seasoning blends, and oils. They are very pungent and flavorful—a little truffle can go a long way!

Chefs around the world have been using truffles as a simple yet effective way to elevate a dish into something gourmet and decadent. I like making truffle butter because it adds a rich creaminess unlike anything else!

Recipe for Truffle Butter Tips

  • For this recipe, I suggest using high-quality butter as compared to cheaper options such as margarine. This will ensure a delicious and velvety finish to your dish!
  • Make sure to use room-temperature butter. If your butter is not soft enough to mix easily, place it in the microwave for 10-15 seconds to help soften.
  • After your butter is made, you can roll it back into a log using wax paper. This will give you little "coins" you can cut off and place over beef, vegetables, or seafood to give it a nice finish.
  • If you have time to make truffle butter ahead of time (even a few hours ahead), the flavors will really infuse and give you the best results!

Can I freeze truffle butter?

Truffle butter can be frozen, which is perfect for making ahead and keeping around for when you need an easy butter sauce in a pinch! Here's a useful trick I have found for freezing butter:

  1. Let the truffle butter sit at room temperature so it is easily spreadable.
  2. Scoop individual portions of butter into a small sheet of plastic wrap (I like to use a 1-ounce cookie scoop).
  3. Wrap each portion of butter and place it in an airtight container or freezer bag.
  4. Label and date the container.
  5. Individual portions of frozen truffle butter is good for 6-8 months in the freezer.

Can I use truffle oil to make truffle butter?

Infused truffle oil can be used to make truffle butter, but I do not recommend it. High-quality butter will provide a delicate finish to what is being served with the truffle butter and the truffle pate gives it a rich flavor.

You want truffle butter to be creamy, with just the right amount of truffle flavor. Though truffle oil is typically infused with fresh truffles, it is not as strong as truffle pate, which will easily mix into the softened butter.
